Asia Cup Final: India Favourite Against Bangladesh

New Delhi: India will take on hosts Bangladesh today in the final of the Asia Cup Twenty20 cricket tournament in Mirpur. India will start as overwhelming favourites as the ICC rankings suggest. While team India is ranked Number One, the hosts hold 10th position. Earlier, Indian Team Director Ravi Shastri expressed that he hoped to see India continue their fearless brand of cricket in the Asia Cup final. The former all-rounder also described India's transformation into an aggressive fighting unit as 'gradual but enjoyable one'. Although India comfortably trounced the hosts by 45 runs in the opening match of the tournament, Bangladesh displayed tremendous amount of resilience as they won three successive matches to advance to the final.

ইসলামিক রাষ্ট্রের তকমা ছাড়তে চাইছে বাংলাদেশ

ঢাকা: দেশের সংখ্যালঘু মানুষদের নিরাপত্তার স্বার্থে ইসলামিক রাষ্ট্রের তকমা ছাড়তে চাইছে বাংলাদেশ। দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই ওই দেশের হিন্দু, খ্রিষ্টান এমনকি মুসলিম শিয়া সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষেরাও ইসলামি মৌলবাদের শিকার হচ্ছিলেন। বাংলাদেশে গত কয়েক বছরে ক্রমাগত বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে সংখ্যালঘুদের উপর আক্রমণের মাত্রা।

ইসলামিক রাষ্ট্রের তকমা মুছে ফেলার জন্য মামলা রুজু হয়েছে বাংলাদেশের সর্বোচ্চ আদালতে। যদিও মামলাটি এখনও বিচারাধীন। ১৯৮৮ সাল থেকে ইসলাম বাংলাদেশের সরকারি ধর্ম। একটি গণতান্ত্রিক রাষ্ট্রে একটি ধর্মকে সরকারিভাবে স্বীকৃতি দেওয়া নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলেছিলেন অনেক সংখ্যালঘু সম্প্রদায়ের নেতা। বাংলাদেশকে ইসলামিক রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে ঘোষণা করার সিদ্ধান্ত অনৈতিক ছিল বলে দাবি সংখ্যালঘুদের। বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশের শতকরা প্রায় ৯০ভাগ মানুষ মুসলিম। আট শতাংশ হিন্দু এবং বাকি দুই শতাংশ অন্যান্য সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষ বাস করেন বাংলাদেশে।

ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসের মাঝামাঝি বাংলাদেশের পঞ্চগড় জেলায় এক পুরোহিতকে গলা কেটে হত্যা করে দুষ্কৃতীরা। একইসঙ্গে ওই ঘটনায় জখম হয়েছিলেন দু'জন হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষ। গত কয়েক বছরে বিশিষ্ট কিছু সংখ্যালঘু সম্প্রদায়ের ব্লগার খুন হয়েছেন পদ্মা নদীর দেশে। ইসলামিক মৌলবাদী গোষ্ঠী জামাতুল মুজাহিদ্দিন বাংলাদেশ এবং আনসুরাল্লা বাংলা টিম গতবছর সাতবার আক্রমণ করেছেন অমুসলিম সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষদের উপর। এদের মধ্যে অনেকে ভিন দেশীও আছেন।

31 Indian Fishermen Arrested By Sri Lanka

New Delhi: In second such detention within a week, 31 Indian fishermen were today arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel on the charge of fishing in the island nation's waters, Tamil Nadu fisheries officials said.

The fishermen - 22 from Tuticorin and nine from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu - were taken into custody along with their three country boats and a mechanised vessel early this morning.

On March 3, eight fishermen were arrested and two boats seized on the charge of crossing the international maritime boundary line and fishing in Lankan territorial waters.

With today's arrest, the number of Tamil Nadi fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has risen to 66.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had on March 3 written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his personal intervention in release of 35 Indian fishermen and 73 fishing boats in Sri Lankan custody and also sought steps to find a permanent solution to the recurring detentions.

Tuticorin Assistant Director of Fisheries Issac Jeyakumar said the fishermen from his district were fishing near Kalpity near Sri Lankan coast when they were arrested today.

Rameswaram Assistant Director of Fisheries Gopinathan said fishermen set out to sea in 641 boats this morning and many of them returned without good catch.

Nine of them were arrested while fishing near Thalaimannar, he said.

Sri Lankan navy men also allegedly caused extensive damage to the fishing nets of some of the fishermen, he said, adding, they were accused of using a banned fishing net and poaching in Lankan waters.
