The Railway minister Suresh Prabhu's
announcement on two new dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) between
Kharagpur and Mumbai and Kharagpur and Vijaywada by 2019, is perhaps one
of the biggest gains for West Bengal from the Rail Budget 2016-17.
These are part of four new DFCs announced by the minister in a bid to
garner an increasing share of the freight traffic revenue.
It is expected to boost freight traffic,
particularly raw material movement for steel, cement and power sectors
across the eastern region.
"Kharagpur set to emerge as the nodal point of two
major DFCs, which is a big positive development for the state," a
Railway official said. With this the spotlight will clearly be on the
Kolkata headquartered South Eastern Railway since Kharagpur comes under
it. While the Kharagpur-Vijaywada section is estimated to be 1100 km in
length, the Kharagpur-Mumbai section is likely to be over 2300 km in
length. The minister also announced a Delhi-Chennai corridor estimated
at over 2340 km and the around 900 km long Chennai-Goa corridor.
At present, Railways have undertaken projects
worth Rs 81,459 crore to develop 3,342 km track comprising Eastern and
Western DFC. Thes e projects are being implemented by Dedicated Freight
Corridor Corporation, which was set up by Railways in 2006 to undertake
planning and development, mobilization of financial resources and
construction, maintenance and operation of the DFCs.
