CCTV footage released on Thursday a day after the
terror attack at the Indian consulate in the Afghan city of Jalalabad
showed a suicide bomber blowing himself up outside the mission.
The footage showed a big explosion near the gate of the consulate just after a man reached the spot.
Six terrorists attacked the Indian consulate on
Wednesday killing three people and injuring 19 more before they were
gunned down by security forces. The dead included an Afghan National
Police personnel and two civilians, but all Indians at the mission
escaped unhurt.
One of the attackers blew himself up in front of
the consulate while the other blew himself up along with the car in
which the group reached the spot. The other four were killed by security
forces in a gunbattle which lasted more than half an hour.
Afghan officials said all the terrorists were
killed before they breached the security at the building. Doors and
windows of the chancery were shattered and at least eight cars were
destroyed.
The attack is fourth in the series of terror
strikes on the Indian Consulate in Jalalabad. It was attacked twice by
hand grenades in 2007 and in 2013, it was attacked by three suicide
bombers. In 2015, an attack on it was thwarted by the Afghan security
forces.
Two months ago, heavily-armed terrorists carried
out an attack on the Indian mission in Mazar-e-Sharif which lasted for
over 25 hours with all the attackers who attempted to storm the building
getting killed by the Afghan forces.
Soon after that, also in January, Islamic State
jihadists claimed responsibility for a deadly gun and bomb siege
targeting the nearby Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad.
