Islamic State Is On The Backfoot: US

Washington: Islamic State is losing a battle against forces arraigned against if from many sides in Iraq and Syria and the focus would turn to stabilising cities seized back from them, the U.S. envoy to a coalition fighting the group said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in Baghdad, U.S. official Brett McGurk declined to put a timeline on when the group would be defeated or when Mosul and Raqqa, the main cities under its control in Iraq and Syria respectively, would be retaken.

Mr. McGurk met in Baghdad Iraqi officials including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi who said in December that 2016 would be a year of "final victory" over the group in Iraq.

"Daesh is feeling pressure now from all simultaneous directions and that's going to continue .. that's going to accelerate," Mr. McGurk said at the press conference, using an acronym for Islamic State.

"Daesh is losing; as they lose we focus increasingly on stabilization," he added, referring to plans being made to rehabilitate and police cities recaptured from militants.

Islamic State has come under pressure from air raids and ground forces actions by various parties in both countries, but they still hold large tracts of land.

Zidane Lauds `Unique` Ronaldo Post Celta Rout

London: Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has lavished praise on star striker Cristiano Ronaldo following his scintillating display in his side's 7-1 thrashing of Celta Vigo in La Liga and described him as a 'unique' player. 

The 31-year-old smashed four goals as he moved second in the all-time goal scorer standings in La Liga with 252 strikes. The Frenchman pointed out that he had never scored four goals in a match, insisting that only Ronaldo was capable of such kind of performance. "I'm happy with Cristiano's performance. Whistles are part of football, they don't only whistle Cristiano. The supporters are demanding and always want more from the players," Zidane was quoted as saying by goal.com. 

The 43-year-old manager believes that Ronaldo's performance against Celta would help in boosting his confidence ahead of the Champions League clash. Reflecting on Madrid's overall performance, Zidane said that Madrid performed tremendously strong in the second half, but added Celta had also attacked brilliantly. "The most important thing is to know what to do when you have the ball and when you don't have it," he added. Madrid is currently standing third in La Liga table and is just one point adrift of Atletico Madrid. They will next lock horns with UD Las Palmas on March 14.

রবিবারের ছুটির দিনকে কাজে লাগাতে সকাল থেকেই ব্যস্ত হাওড়ার তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসের প্রার্থীরা। সকাল ১০টায় বেলুড় মঠে পুজো দিয়ে প্রচার শুরু করলেন বালি কেন্দ্রের তারকা প্রার্থী বৈশালী ডালমিয়া। অন্যদিকে, এদিন সকালে খুরুট ধর্মতলা লেনে নিজের এলাকা থেকেই পায়ে হেঁটে প্রচারের সূচনা করেন বিদায়ী রাজ্য মন্ত্রিসভার কৃষি বিপণন দফতরের মন্ত্রী বর্তমানে মধ্য হাওড়ার তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসের হেভিওয়েট প্রার্থী অরূপ রায়। পুরনিগমের মেয়র পরিষদের সদস্য শ্যামল মিত্র এবং অন্যান্য নেতা-কর্মীদের সঙ্গে নিয়ে এদিন অরূপবাবু তাঁর বিধানসভা এলাকায় প্রচার করেন। পরে হালদারপাড়া ফ্রেন্ডস্ অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের একটি পাড়া ফুটবল টুর্নামেন্টের অনুষ্ঠানে আসেন তিনি। তিনি বলেন, 'প্রচারে জনসংযোগের উপর জোর দেওয়া হয়েছে। বিরোধী হিসেবে এখানে এখনও কাউকে খুঁজে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না। গত পাঁচ বছরের উন্নয়নের নিরিখেই মানুষ ভোট দেবেন। হাওড়ায় ১৬-০ তে তৃণমূল জয়ী হবে। দল যে আসনে যাঁকে প্রার্থী করেছেন তাঁর হয়েই সকলকে প্রচারে নামতে হবে। উত্তর হাওড়া এবং দক্ষিণ হাওড়ায় দেওয়াল লিখন মুছে দেওয়া থেকে শুরু করে অবরোধের মতো যা কিছু হয়েছে সব বিষয়েই দল তাদেরকে সতর্ক করেছে। প্রার্থীতালিকা ঘোষণা হওয়ার আগে পর্যন্ত অনেকেই দাবিদার থাকতে পারেন কিন্তু প্রার্থীর নাম ঘোষণার পর আর কারও দাবি মানা হবেনা। দলের প্রার্থীর হয়ে সকলকে প্রচারে নামতে হবে।
