What is this thing called Love? You are not the first to ask. From poets to ‘in love’ teens, the question of what exactly love is, has troubled us quite a long. It has troubled the song writers in putting pen to papers.Scientist claim to have uncovered the secrets of how emotions affect the brain. By scanning the brains of men and women who say they were in love, and comparing them with people who had fallen out in love or never have been in love researchers say that they have been able to piece together the first map of the changes that occur in brain.
The use of a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan (fMRI), which measures brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow, showed that love involves a dozen areas of the brain, with one area – the caudate nucleus – dealing with the ending of a love affair. A cocktail of chemicals also carries messages from one region to another. Professor of University of science and technology, Dr. Xiaochu Zhang commented that, love-related alterations undergoes when the term ‘Love’ is stated. Areas of the brain involved in reward, motivation, emotion, and social functioning are involved.
The areas that are more active in the people who are in love includes the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, insula, caudate, amygdala, and temporal lobe. ‘Light shed on the underlying neurophysiological mechanism of love is quite effective on both men and women. Every functions work properly and motivation increase at a high range.’ Well, that may be true enough. But it’s a shame that they couldn’t find a more romantic way to say it.
