Sugata Bose speaks in Lok Sabha on Wednesday on a
discussion about the current situation in universities. Just over a
month ago a Dalit research scholar tragically took his own life. Tragic
death of Dalit scholars in India is nothing new. This alarming fear
should have raised questions. Rohith Vemula left us a poignant message
when he chose to leave this world. Rohith is not dead. He lives in the
heaven above like a star.
We have a heartless govt that refuses to listen to the cries of despair from backward parts of the society. The govt thinks it has a monopoly over nationalism. I believe in nationalism that instills a spirit of selfless service in people. Nationalism followed by govt is narrow and selfish. We unequivocally condemn the slogans and posters at JNU. We also condemn how entire university is portrayed as hub of anti-nationals.
In contrast to the Central Govt, WB Govt and JU administration knew how to defuse tension and not overreact. Indian nationalism is not so hollow to be insulted by a few slogans. We must give students freedom to think, speak, make mistakes & learn from them. I agreed with Kanhaiya when he extolled Ambedkar, praised Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. Kanhaiya was right when he said RSS did not participate in freedom struggle.
Kanhaiya was right when he said RSS did not participate in freedom struggle. We condemn the vigilantism of self-appointed custodians. The Communists not only did not participate in freedom movement but also betrayed it like in 1942. Govt must end the witch-hunt for anti-nationals and scape-goating.
No group in this country is the univocal spokesperson for this country. Nationalism talked about by the other side is despotic centralism. Tagore, who composed our national anthem, was a critic of nationalism. He wrote beautiful songs of patriotism. Those who are describing nationalism so narrowly will one day end up calling Rabindranath an anti-national. Free our universities free our students. Let our youth dream for our country.
