New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sakshi Maharaj, known for making controversial statements, Saturday, appealed to the judiciary to intervene in the matters of Islam as it does in the Hindu religion.
Commenting
on the issue of gender discrimination in religious places, the BJP leader said,
"The judiciary should intervene in the matters of Islam, in which women
are considered “pairon ki jooti', jab zaroorat pade to pehenlo nahi to utar ke
bahar phek do”.
“Muslim
women are our mothers and sisters, they are also facing injustice,” adding that
“they should also be allowed to offer namaz.”
“The way
judiciary is intervening in the matters of Hindus, it should also intervene in
matters related to Islam,” he added.
While saying
every citizen of the country should have equal rights, Sakshi Maharaj said,
“The nation should be run according to the Constitution and not 'fatwas'. The
government and judiciary must ensure this.”
There has
been a huge debate going on within the country over gender discrimination in
many famous temples across the country. Recently, the Bombay High Court
declared that no law prevents women from entering places of worship and there
should be no gender discrimination as far as entering one is concerned.
